چکیده

Ahstrct-Styrene maleic anhydride copolymers (SMACs) are of particular commercial and academic interest. The bulk copolymer&&ion reaction is characterized by a very fast reaction rate and an important gel effect. The copolymer has a strong tendency to be alternate when maleic anhydride is in excess. In order to obtain a copolymer with less than 50% of incorporated MA, a good quality of mixing must be reached. As a matter of fact, the copolymer composition is particularly sensitive to local concentration and temperature fluctuations. For this purpose a tubular recycle reactor was developed to ensure good homogeneity of concentration and temperature. The composition of the copolymer obtained is in good agreement with predicted values and the uniformity of composition was measured for the entire molecular mass distribution. The characterization of the reactor (both hydrodynamic and stability) and the quality of the resulting polymer are presented herein. The limits of use of this reactor for the ST/MA copolymerization are described. Furthermore the effects of the operating parameters on the reactor and the copolymerization reaction are discussed.

Simulation, Optimization & Control of Styrene Bulk Polymerization in a Tubular Reactor

In this paper, optimization and control of a tubular reactor for thermal bulk post-polymerization of styrene have been investigated. By using the reactor mathematical model, static and dynamic simulations are carried out. Based on an objective function including polymer conversion and polydispersity, reactor optimal temperature profile has been obtained. In the absence of model mismatch, de...

V2O5-MoO3 Catalysts Preparation and Performance Testing on the Oxidation of Benzene to Maleic Anhydride in a Fixed Bed Reactor

In this research, the selective oxidation of benzene to maleic anhydride (MAN) in a fixed-bed reactor was studied. The gas phase catalytic oxidation of benzene was carried outin a laboratory scale fixed bed reactor on the catalysts, which were prepared having two different compositions on silica gel. The effects of temperature, flow rates of benzene and air, and catalyst type on the reactio...

Melt Free-Radical Grafting of Maleic Anhydride onto Biodegradable Poly(lactic acid) by Using Styrene as a Comonomer

Maleic anhydride (MA) was grafted onto poly(lactic acid) (PLA) in the presence of styrene (St) by using a free-radical grafting methodology. The grafting degree (Dg) of MA was increased from 0.65 wt % to 1.1 wt % with the St/MA ratio up to 2/1, where the grafting efficiency (Eg) of MA was 27%. However, both Dg and Eg were decreased with further increasing of the St/MA ratio to 4/1. The Dg of MA...

Solvent effects on the copolymerization of styrene with maleic anhydride: determination of apparent reactivity ratios from the penultimate unit model

-A method for optimization of monomer feed composition to obtain the most accurate reactivity ratios has been described by Tidwell and Mortimer. The proposed method is more generally applicable than for use with the Mayo-Lewis model and copolymer composition vs monomer feed composition data. By means of a simulated example involving the penultimate unit models the effect of experimental design ...
